Welcome to the Bretfeld PlantEcoFizz lab at Kennesaw State University! We study how plants function in order to understand where they grow and how they interact with one another and the environment. Or to say it in fancier terms: Our research integrates the ecology and physiology of individual plants and vegetation communities at different spatial scales with the goal to optimize management of natural landscapes and their ecosystem functions.

Our research is anchored in a “first principles” approach: We are looking to understand the ecology and physiology of plants based on physical laws and principles, such as the flow of energy. One might say that we’re trying to figure out what the flux is going on!
